Japan Planning Update #32

August 3rd, 2007 · No Comments

61 days to go! And I am counting the pennies. I should finally start full-time work next week, which will hopefully bag me £800 a month or so, and if I don’t spend too much should get me at least the magic £1,500 by mid-October, which is my last payday. I was worried that my savings wouldn’t be enough to live on, so I messed around in Excel for a bit and found that with a part-time job and expenses of ~¥100,000 a month (no idea how realistic that is, but it’s a nice round number I arrived at after briefly trying to work out food/transport/rent) I should sort of scrape through until August 2008. Then I tried seeing how I’d do with a ¥3,000/hour cushy teaching job, and apparently I’d come out with a million yen (though that’s highly unlikely).

So basically, if I keep spending low, I should be able to get by even on a low ¥900/hour part-time job, and I should hopefully get more than that: and if not, I could always work more hours. And that’s assuming I don’t work at all in October (when I get there), February (when I’ll be taking a break in Hokkaido) and July (when I’m in Kyushu/Shikoku).

Although I am aware that finances never go to plan, and I should be prepared for the worst.

Incidentally, this place looks awesome, although I’m not sure if my Japanese is good enough. But free skiing, free meals and accomodation, and ¥110,000 a month in pure profit is gravy.
